Friday May 2nd: Suffolk’s WW II defences: from Aldeburgh to Dunwich – Dave Thurlow of RSPB Minsmere.

Dave’s talk will focus on the early threat of invasion from the North Sea, and the defences put in place along our local coastline. What was built, why, and what can still be seen today?

Victory in Europe over Nazi Germany was only possible as long as Britain was a secure base.

Although Suffolk did not suffer the horrors of the Blitz, heavy AA batteries were quickly moved here to shoot down the new lethal V1 flying bombs, known as Doodlebugs.

There will be an official lighting of the beacon at Sizewell, with a ceremony and music on Thursday May 8th, VE80 day. Organised by Leiston-cum-Sizewell Town Council.
